After earning a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design from East Carolina University and returning home to begin my professional career, it became increasingly clear there was a gap in how custom homes and local builds were being completed—often without the guidance of a design professional.

I witnessed firsthand the impact of this gap while working with clients furnishing and decorating their newly built homes. Despite their initial excitement and substantial investment, many homes lacked functionality, thoughtful space planning, and cohesive design. Knowing that these problems couldn’t be undone at this point, I felt their frustration as if it were my own. It became clear to me that without proper design guidance, even the most well-intentioned projects could fall short of their full potential.

This realization became the driving force behind the founding of Melissa Wilks Design Co. Our mission is simple: to partner with families and builders from the earliest stages to ensure every decision—from layout and space planning to finishes and furnishings—is thoughtful, intentional, and aligned with the overall vision.
