Transforming an Abandoned 1970s Home into a Modern Riverfront Oasis

When I first saw this North Carolina home, it was clear the house had seen better days. Built in the 1970s, it hadn’t been updated since and had suffered from years of neglect. The challenge was to create a fresh, inviting space that embraced the gorgeous riverfront location while addressing the damage and outdated design. The result? A stunning custom home that blends organic modern style with luxury design, turning an old, dilapidated structure into a beautiful riverfront oasis.
One of the first things to go was the large brick fireplace, which was obstructing prime views of the water. In this image you can also see one of only 2 original windows we kept in the whole home---the square picture window to the left of the glass doors.
The original home had a traditional 70s layout with closed-off rooms, funky wallpaper, and outdated fixtures. Years of neglect had compromised the salvageability of most of the home's interior, making a simple remodel impossible. Instead, what would ensue was a 2 year remodel + new construction journey.
The first meeting I ever had with the homeowners took place in this little green kitchen. I can remember looking around and thinking, "we certainly have our work cut out for us."
Our on-site meetings certainly looked very different by the end of the project. This 16-foot custom island was a collaboration between our trim carpenter, cabinetry team, stone installers, electricians, and flooring installer!
Interior Design Highlights
The interior design was a major focus of the renovation. Here are some standout features:
Open-concept living area with vaulted ceilings and large archways dividing each living space.
Custom 16-foot kitchen island with walnut dining table extension and waterfall ends.
Spa-like bathrooms featuring zero-entry showers, natural wood tones, unique tile selections and modern fixtures.
A focus on wall-mounted lighting vs. overhead, designed to enhance the modern-yet-welcoming aesthetic.
Creating a Riverfront Oasis
The home’s location on the river was a major inspiration. Outdoor living spaces were designed to connect with the interior, including:
A large deck that expands the full length of the home.
A breezeway connecting the detached workshop and garages, offering a glimpse through the home to the riverfront view it overlooks.
8 sets of custom steel and glass French doors lining the back of the home, allowing natural light in and providing unobstructed views of the river.

These features make the home feel like a true oasis where the river is part of everyday life.
Final Thoughts on the Transformation
This project shows how an old home can be transformed into a modern, luxurious retreat with thoughtful renovation and interior design. The organic modern style creates a timeless look that honors the natural setting while providing all the comforts of a custom home.
If you’re considering a remodel or custom build in North Carolina, especially near the water, focus on materials and design that protect your investment and enhance your lifestyle. Working with an experienced interior designer can help you balance beauty, function, and durability.
